Plastic Welding JD Hood?

The hood for my 345 is split on one front corner, all the way to the top of the lower panel. Figured I would have to replace it - but its almost $300. The split is pretty straight and on an inside corner - is there a way to weld plastic together that would work in this kind of application?

I had the same problem with my LX188. I took some (flexible) screen and smeared it with JB weld on the inside of the hood - overlapping the crack. About three applications. I have been careful when I open / close the hood, but so far no problems. JD should have made a metal hood.

It wasn't too pretty, but I have bolted them together. I took a piece of thin metal (I think it was HVAC trunk line tin) and bent it to follow the curve. Then I drilled out holes on either side about every 4 inches and bolted it tight. It held until the old man blew the engine. You could rivet it as well.

Why couldn't you just get some fiberglass mat and fiberglass the back of it? One of the neighbors has a combine that has 80 percent of it held together that way.
 
Plus the decal kit. Unbolt the two pieces and then you can glue-weld- repair from the inside. The hood is two pieces
(A can of JD brand rattle can paint works good when ready for paint.
 
Thanks for the ideas. I"m gonna check with my local body shop to see if they have any ideas and then do something myself before spending $300.

I mow a widow lady's lawn with her JD 345 and had the same thing happen. I'd cleaned the screen on top, put the hood down as normal and "plunk" I heard something hit the floor. It was the bottom corner of the hood (picture). I asked the dealer if this is a common problem, he said "people run into things all the time". Well, I've never run into anything. I suspect since the exhaust exits nearby it might make the plastic brittle? Holy Cow! Are you saying that little piece is $300!
I'm going back to the dealer and have a talk!

Nope - that piece was only $30 - I needed it also. I think you are right, the heat from the exhaust weakens the plastic over time.
