Case 220 won't start

After solving the drive problem I mounted the mower deck, started the tractor and let it set idling about quarter throttle, after 5 minutes it just quit. It has gas, going thru the fuel pump, spark at the points and plug, it does backfire thru the carburetor about every 4th or 5th revolution of the engine. What next?????

Backfiring through carb could be mis gapped points, bad condensor or sticky valve to start with. Can also be a bare wire someplace, but that's not as likely. Lean carb setting can mimic a backfire too.

Took the points out and they were really burnt. Replace and set gap and fired right up. Thanks for the help. This is a great forum for help.
