My 1970 John Deere 140 starting leaking fluid from the right rear wheel about a week ago.
I purchased it Sept 2013.
I am not a real good mechanic but, I was wondering what is involved to replace the seal.
Can someone help me on this matter.
Thanks, Dave

1970 would be pre-30,001 serial #, so here's the parts diagram...

The seal is INBOARD of the axle bearing, and associated washers and snap rings. Snap rings are #3 and #4. Seal is Key # 6, part #AT11676.

You can view the parts catalog @ www.jdparts.com.

I have a manual at the shop, if you need more info and can wait a day or two I can post the official procedure to replace the seal.

Hello Bob,
Thanks for the schematic on the 140.
It looks confusing to me but, maybe I can get it figured out.
I will take you up on the offer for additional information on the how to procedure.
I m in no hurry to dig into this problem.
I have a non heated pole barn and the weather is calling for colder days soon here in Indiana.
Again thanks for your time and help, Dave.

Basically, you have to pry off the outer dust cap and get everything out of the way to the internal snap ring that retains the bearing, then withdraw the axle shaft and bearing from the housing to access the seal. If the SM has significantly more details I will post them.

Bob, I will need to drain the fluid from the trans first correct?
I purchased fluid and filter from JD and that is on my to-do list anyway.
Thanks for the additional information on changing the seal.
Dave

Bob,
I believe the pump for this axle is a Sunstrand
Hydrogear. Do you know who made the transaxle ?

Thanks

I don't think the fluid level is high enough to run out the seal area if not drained, but it MAY be. As you said, you are draining it anyway, so do the seal replacement then, to avoid ANY chance of a mess!

Thanks Bob, you have been very kind and informative.
Not sure when I will tackle this repair, may wait until spring unless we would happen to get another warm spell for a few days in a row.
I will keep you updated when I start the repair.
I did purchase the seal on eBay today. About the same price as JD but, I won't have to drive to the dealers for it. Save me about $ 10 dollars in gas.
