22 hp B S Intek info needed

I have a 2001 B & S 22hp Intek in a Troybilt and am getting a puff of blue smoke on startup. Tractor has a little over 600 hours. Does this engine have replaceable valve seals? I have always used synthetic oil and am the original owner. Now sometimes its more than a puff, it smokes for about 30 seconds after startup.

I have 2 old single cylinder B S and a Kohler, that smoke for about 30 seconds on start up. They use very little oil, just smoke up the place. All have overhead valves.

The way I see it, they are old and really isn't much of a big problem, except for the smoke.

Synthetic oil is the tipoff. Modern engines do well with synthetic oils in automotive applications such as cars, trucks, tractors, and the like. BUT....every small engine manual I have looked at recommends AGAINST using synthetics stating that excessive oil consumption and smoking will generally be the result.

Synthetic oils generally have a viscosity rating of 5 weight or less, and thin out less in operation and when the temp rises. Conventional oils generally have a higher viscosity rating in the 10 to 15 weight range. While the engine may benefit from higher film strength and less breakdown under high temp operation, it will also allow more to slip by the rings and valve guides - causing smoking.

If it doesn't smoke any worse than that and does not use much oil, I would not worry about it at this point. Just check oil every time before you use mower, or if you have a very large yard, every time you stop for a drink or break. IE, every hour or so. Until it gets to the point that it looks like you are fumigating for bugs, I wouldn't worry much.

When eng cold & before starting check that valve cover gasket(s) not leaking & dripping on muffler causeing smoke till muffler gets hot, after that pull dipstick & check for an overfull oil level, smell oil on stick,if you smell gas in oil remove air filter & check for oil in filter/filter houseing, all the above are indications of a problem in carb possibly caused by a leaking float valve, sticking float or some other problem in carb,if valve leaking/float sticking gas will drain into crankcase when eng at rest, this will dilute oil/raise oil level, when eng started excess gas/oil mixture in crankcase will be blown out breather valve & into carb causeing smoke, this is a common problem on many mod ohv briggs eng.

Other possible causes of problem-as has been said wrong/too thin oil, worn valve guides/bad stem seals,ring/cyl wear & oil leaking past rings when eng cold & at rest, sticking rings, broken ring(s)head gasket(s) starting to leak when eng cold.

Get mod/type numbers off eng & goto link below,in briggs eng parts listings lookup your eng mod/type#,look at assembly drawing of head & see if there is a seal for/on valve stem listed.

The smoke is definitely blowing out of the muffler pointed straight toward the front of the tractor. Thank you all for your replies.

I am pretty sure there will be a valve stem seal on the intake valve.
Get the model and type number off the valve cover and go to Partstree.com and look it up.

I would recommend you change to straight 30wt. oil for that engine. You should be able to get the genuine Briggs oil at a Box store, Tractor Supply or a Lawn and Garden Equipment dealer.

I've thought about 30 weight, but I run a 42" 2 stage snow blower in the winter. I guess I need to go to the pole barn and look up the B & S spec for oil/temp.on this engine.
