18 hp briggs cam?

Is there a web sight that sells used engine parts besides ebay and craigslist. I'm trying to do a friend a favor. I took his engine apart, discovered it needs of a cam. New cam and gasket for a single cylinder 18 hp briggs runs about $90. Friend doesn't want to spend that much.

Any help would be appriciated.

Tell yer friend: He"d might as well "Bite the bullet" and spend the cash for a cam! I"d do that! My friends say i"m so tight, i squeak when i walk! Ain"t no use spending the money to buy a used cam. And, i do squeak when i walk--if"n i don"t oil my wooden leg occasionally! (Yeah, i do have one!A souveneir of WW II!) Rusty Jones, the mower man.
 
As Rusty said,tell your friend to bite the bullet & buy a new cam or give him several options.

1-tell him he's getting fat & lazy and borrow/buy a new or used push/self propelled walk behind mower,after 2-3 times of that I'll bet he'll come up with the $$ for cam real quick.

2-tell him to locate someone that has sheep/goats & rents them by hr/day & turn them loose in yard.

3-call several local lawn mowing services & see what they charge by wk/month.

4-the other side of the coin is your friend is "playing you" in that he's to lazy/ignorant to locate cam/gasket himself,give him the pn's for cam/gasket & let him locate and buy a new/used cam,right now you're doing all the mech work,research & leg work trying to locate cam while he just sits back whining,this can strain a friendship to the breaking point.IF it were my call & he doesn't want to spend the money for a new cam I'd put eng in a cardboard box & give back to him with a message-when you locate/buy a new/used cam give me a call & I'll repair eng.
 
I still have the cam that I had on ebay. It did not sell. What part number does it call for. If you are not sure, post the model and type of the engine and I will check for you. If mine will work for you, I'm sure we can work something out. Sam
 
When I was repairing mowers and some one said they didn't want to spend that much I told them to get some one else to work on it, as I didn't charge much in the first place.
What I found out there are a lot of cheap skates out there, they didn't want you to make any money, yet they drive a $40,000.00 pickup truck and complain they don't have any money.
Could that be the reason they don't have any money?
 
WHY don't you go to the parts lookup section of the Briggs web site armed with the ID plate info off of the engine and get a part # for the cam, then punch the part number in to GOOGLE. You MAY be surprises at how many "for sale" this will bring up.
 
This company has the camshaft for$79.15. The part number is 793880. I saw some for sale on Amazon and Ebay by using this P/N. Hal

Ebay has one for $56.00 and Amazon has one for $65.00 with free shipping. Hal

Looks like mine won't work for you. Thats too bad, I was going to give it to you just for the shipping.
 
I would not recommend installing a used cam in any engine that could potentially come back and require additional free repair if it doesn't work.

Thanks you for the thought. I'm doing this job for a friend and not charging him. Been retired for 10 years and it's always nice to have something to do.

I figure it's like paying it forward. I do things for my neighbors and they do things for me. No money is ever exchanged.

Same here George. I like to help people whenever I can. Many times people have helped me in life and I always say, we are all here to help one another. Sorry my cam won't help your friend..

My parts supplier says the cam is a common problem on the 18 hp, so I'm also looking for a beat up ridder with a good engine. I've seen the MTD 38-42 inchers with a wide range of engines ranging from 12.5 hp and up.
