Need input on JD 400 from mid 80's. Local school has one on surplus disposal. Calling for sealed bids. Has mower deck, snow blower & cab. Which motor might it have & any weak points. Shows 3 hyd levers on left side. Were these mostly hydrostatic trans?
If I get the bid it would replace my 71 model 112.
Thanks in advance.

Those tractors were built starting in 1975 thru 1983. The engine is the mod KQ532 twin cylinder Kohler. You're buying a pig in a poke unless you can inspect the tractor and hear it run. Hal

To add to what Toro said, ALL were hydrostatic.

I have on, a GREAT machine, like a 318 on steroids..

The Kohler engine (in this model) is a very good engine, but the are getting old and parts are ridiculous.

Small Engine Warehouse has a Briggs repower kit.

Thanks for the come backs. They have a couple other vehicles listed in notice too. Says all in running condition, tractor needs some TLC. Pics look good, tail lights missing & a rip in seat. Sealed bids close this Friday.
Personal preference is horizontal crankshaft over verticle, so that is good. Have good local source for Kohler parts if needed.
Think I'll shoot a bid about 5 bucks over minimum & see what happens. Small notice in local "throw away" paper, maybe not many people saw it.

I bought a replacement engine from the smallenginewarehouse in 2006 for a Troy Bilt tiller. I only paid $100.00 for the tiller and I sold the 6hp Tecumseh for $65.00. I bought a B&S 10hp engine with electric start. The tiller needed tines and new seals under the tine holders.
I still have the tiller and I painted it in 2006
using PPG's Omni paint. Hal
