looking at 1981 JD 216 lawn tractor, mowing deck, has rear wheel weights, always sheded, one owner- in estate auction. only thing noted is ugly seat. Seems like it is generating a lot of interest. Needing new mower, but dont know how much it could be worth, you know auctions, willing to pay up to decent amount but need some ideas as to value to know when to stop, thanks

Don't get into the bidding at the start of bidding. Wait until the bidding slows down. A lot of these auctions have someone running up the price. The auctions here in MD have a 10% buyers fee plus 6% MD sales tax. Some of them charge 35% for selling a home. Remember that tractor is 32 years old. Hal

Short answer: They are good tractors, but it would have to be extremely nice to be worth more than $500.

The 1981 model should have a serial number plate on the console facing the driver's seat between 155,001-190,000. The model number will be a C216 plus another letter. The 16 hp engine is comparatively uncommon compared to the smaller engines. The tractor should have a manual PTO clutch. Parts could have been changed our over the years. Like El Toro posted, it's 32 years old. The 200-series is not comfortable for someone who is really tall or really big around.
