18 hp briggs cam repair?

Is it possible to repair the decompression part of cam or do you have to replace the entire cam?

Is there a place on where I can buy a cam and gaskets cheaper than $150 for both?

Never had to replace cam on briggs. Can I get by splitting the block or is it more like removing the head, rod?

Would I need an entire overhaul gasket set or can I buy just the gaskets I need?
Thanks.
George

what model 18hp do you have? If it is a single cylinder, then you removed the push rods, removed bottom cover and take cam out? Are you sure it has a bad cam and don't just need valves adjusted? They get out of adjustment pretty easy and when that happens, compression release does not function. Valve clearance is .004.

George, someone seen you coming, lol, if it is a single cylinder Briggs engine, a new cam should be in the 75.00-80.00 range. The one I looked up for a 33 ci engine, sells for 72.99 for the cam and a 5.00 gasket and 4.40 for the lower seal, where I work at, email is open if you need help getting a little more reasonable camshaft

Yes, I'm 100% sure it has a bad cam. Yes, it's a single cylinder. Nice to know all I'll need is the engine gasket and not the set.

I've adjusted a few briggs engines, even my honda engine. I blue printed this engine so I knew for certain when it was on compression stroke. Absolutely, no movement in either exhaust or intake valve.

As for cam, can a cam from another single cylinder briggs be used, say a 14 hp?

Is there a cheaper source for a new cam?

Can the old cam be repaired?

Many thanks

JT,
My local guy said the same thing, $80. He gave me the price for an entire gasket set, $60.

When I get time, I'll take engine apart and take a look see inside.

At this point friend doesn't want to put $150 in a used mower, when there are many on craigslist for $100-$200 range.

However, the rest of the mower has been well taken care of.

The acr cam is usually part of the complete cam assembly, get mod/spec# of eng & goto link below, lookup mod/spec# of eng in briggs eng listings, see if acr listed seperate from cam,if not then write down pn for cam, goto ebay & enter briggs cam in search & check if any new/used cams your pn listed, also do a goggle search for briggs + pn of acr(if seperate)or cam pn & do some online shopping for prices, gaskets are avail seperate or complete set,at most you'll probably only need sump gasket & shaft seal if you choose to replace when case split.

To remove cam, turn eng on flywheel side, support eng so it doesn't move around & flywheel cover clear of bench/floor,remove oil sump, rotate crank till crank/cam timing marks line up,loosen rocker arms so valves are not putting pressure on rockers, pushrods & tappets, pull cam out of block.

After re-reading your post,if you get no movement on either valve, the cam gear is probably broken or teeth broken on gear,on many mod briggs eng the cam gear is plastic/nylon.

Your local lawn mower shop may have a used cam.
Ford and Chevy had that problem back in the 1950's. Some were replaced free. Hal

Joe, the cam gear is OK. The decompression part on cam is not plastic. Found a few pieces of the decompression part. Definately a problem.

Also having a problem findin pn for the sump gasket. Any help is appriciated. There are 12 bolts holding the sump on.
