JD lx 178 fuel starvation

I have a John Deere lx178, with a fuel problem. I have cleaned the fuel tank, blown out the gas line, changed the pickup tube from tank. For a few minutes I can get a good stream of gasoline. then it just stops, and no fuel flowing. If i blow back into the tank from the fuel shut off valve, it flows very well, hook up start the mower and it runs for about five minutes or so, then no fuel. repeat process and it runs for another five minutes. tank is clean, so is gas, lines are clear, it is like an air lock. Gas cap is clean and vented. now what? any help appreciated.

Try running with tank cap loose or removed,if that cures problem then vent plugged or cap bad.If it doesn't cure problem if fuel line exits from top of tank, remove tank fitting on top of tank & check for cracks in fitting, pickup tube inside tank loose on fitting,cracks/split in pickup tube or the more likely cause, screen on filter at bottom of pickup tube dirty/plugged.Before checking pickup tube in tank,if fuel line has an inline filter between shutoff valve/tank,try replacing inline filter first, filter may be dirty/plugged or something in line plugging inlet nipple on filter.

thanks Joe.
fuel tank has tube in top of tank. It was fine and clean. tank was cleaned fuel line was cleaned. has a shut off valve just before the in line filter. also good . Went over it all again
Was the fuel cap vent. created airlock. blowing back in line would vent it for another five minutes or so but fixing cap has it going again. Thanks

With the pickup tube in the top of the tank, there is a fuel pump on the engine also. sometimes the diaphragms wear, or the check valves in them stick, and won't pump fuel consistently.
