Sears Craftsman LT4000 Won't go into gear

I have a Sears Craftsman LT4000 (quite old; grey boxy hood);
Model 917.255581; serial 061192S. It won"t go into gear!
at first it was hard to move the shifter, but it would still go into
gear. Now I can move the shifter; it"s still hard; but it won"t go into gear or move any more. No noise, or anything...

Is it toast, or is it fixable?

Any help appreciated, Jim.

Well, I went to SearsPartsDirect and the trans. is NLA, and I didn't see a parts breakdown of the trans. Many of those transmissions were made by another company and could be repaired without too much effort. You may try to find a tag on the transaxle itself, then find parts locally. But, first, check out the shift linkage for wear or binding. It may be simple, if not you will either have to go inside it or get someone else to.Good luck.

They sold a few million of those grey hood craftsman mowers. Just ask around, someone is sure to be junking one of them that has a good transmission.

Many things come into play on one like that. Can you shift it when the engine is not running?? If yes can you start it in gear clutch down to test that the clutch is releasing as it should. Ya it is a belt clutch set up but if the belt is not releasing you can not shift
