Hello all. Just acquired a Case 446. I want an owners manual but those listed here omit my serial number for my 1978. leads? in the meantime, can someone confirm what weight oil goes in the transaxle? thanks.

Contact Brian Hildreth of Salem Power. He will mail you a new, correct OP manual for your tractor and sell you any parts that you may need for it.

Because the transaxle does not use hypoid style gears, there is no reason to use hypoid gear oil but it will work just fine. I prefer to use 20W50 or 15W40 motor oil instead which is the same oil that is used in the hydraulic system. You will need STRAIGHT grade 30W for the Onan engine. Purchase 2 quarts to cover the engine and 10 quarts to cover the hydraulic system and the trans-axle. The trans-axle will hold 3 quarts which is enough to make the oil drool out of the fill plug on the rear of the housing.

The OP manual will explain how to drain the hydraulic system.

Tom, thanks for the intel. The hydraulic tank level is sat as is the engine oil. The transaxle contains cottage cheese indicating water contamination and I wanted to drain that. I'll chase down the manual. Again, thanks.

I suggest that you drain the trans-axle and then put 2 quarts of diesel fuel into it. Drive the tractor around for an hour to allow the diesel to wash all the crud off the gears and housing. Drain it out. You may want to repeat this process again until you see the diesel coming out, as clean as it went in. At that point, install the new motor oil.

Water can be introduced two ways. One way has to do with either loose bolts or a failed top-cover gasket. The other way comes about by never changing the oil and over time, condensation contaminates the oil. The manual calls for the trans-axle oil to be changed every 500 hours OR ANNUALLY.... whichever comes first. Too many owners read as far as the 500 hour part and never change the oil because they only put 50 hours on the tractor per year.
