Montgomery Ward Tiller 1982 1580J Motor

Does anyone know if the Harbor Freight motors will replace this 5hp (any HP) motor. (130202-1672-02. HF has a part 69730 6.5hp but can't see if it can handle this tensioning arm) Tiller has the Reverse second pulley and the tensioning arm is bolted to the motor near drive shaft. Hate to lose Reverse or pay to rebuild with parts. They have the $99 6.5hp but not sure it has threaded port to attach the swing tension arm.

Call the small engine warehouse with the engine model and spec number to see if they have a replacement engine. I bought a 10hp B&S from them in 2006 for my Horse model Troy Bilt tiller.
It replaced a 6hp Tecumseh engine I sold for $65.00. Hal

That is the model/spec for a flat head Briggs and Stratton engine. Nobody, not even Briggs and Stratton, makes a replacement engine that you can count on just bolting on all your old bracketry to that will replace that engine.

I think you are looking at fabricating at least some or perhaps all of the bracketry that bolts to the engine in order to install a new replacement.

Hi Everett, the HF engine does not have the thread hole needed to mount the swing arm to, but they do have 4 metric bolt hole around the CS and as posted you may be able to fabricate a bracket to mount the swing arm to, the HF engine will make a good engine for the tiller I have one on one of my tillers plenty of power and runs nice. Your other option is to find a old 5 hp B&S and install it, one good scorse (if your in snow country) is older snowblowers generally there engines don't have all that many hours and can be gotten pretty reasonable.

I jumped in with both feet and tore the engine down yesterday. I was hoping they make a engine with the port to thread my bracket and hang my tensioning/swing arm. But nooooo! It would have been cheaper in parts and time to buy a cheap engine. So I am into getting some gaskets and putting it back together. Hopefully starts. I did not find any broken parts, it was frozen up and might have been some carbon flakes, little shaving of metal. Can't see anything and I can hand crank it now. Cylinder head was pretty good, rings looked good, gears were like new, valves a bit carbon lined but will make seats better. Clean it! Never took apart anything but a weed trimmer.
