JD 235 tie rod fell apart

Tie rod that goes from wheel to wheel---ball came out of the socket. Socket is made in the end of the rod.... no replaceable ends. Am I stuck with buying the whole thing? Right now I took the rod out and clamped into vise and with a punch I bent the edges of the socket back in around the ball. A temporary fix for while.
Any suggestions here? Wish they had replaceable ends...my old CC has.

I had that happen once. I put the ball back into the socket, found a flat washer the proper size and cut a slot in it so it would slide behind the ball Then tack welded the washer to the rod, or drag link. Didn't look too professional, but it worked.

Same problem with my Sears Suburbans. I buy a replacement tie rod end at the auto parts store, screw in a short cap screw, measure and cut off the broken end, then butt weld the cap screw to the end of the rod. An easy fix.

Good idea also. My dad showed me the trick about using a punch and go around the inner edge of the socket and bending that edge down. Again that is only good for a while.

thanks to both of you for the reply.

Bite the bullet & replace the whole tie rod now. The repair is temporary, & if one end came apart chances are the other end will fail soon. Lots easier to do now while you have it in the shop than later when in a rush to get grass cut or snow plowed.

Yes, I thought the same thing. The other will go soon. I checked...$24 at Jd dealer. Not to bad. Thought it would be more.
