Unknown tractor, what is it?

My friend is thinking of buying this tractor (see photo), and we have no idea who made it. It has a front facing 18 hp Briggs engine. The back is connected to a drive shaft with universal joints to the hydro trans. It also has a dual pulley driving a second dual pulley which is connected to a drive shaft to a gear box on top of the 42" mower deck. It has a 2 speed rear axle and hydraulic lift on the deck. The trans control is a lever on the right side of the cowl. It has 15" rear wheels; the large seat makes the tractor look smaller then it is. Any ideas who made it? Thanks!

MTD 990. One of the best heavy duty garden tractors ever made comparable to the old bolens, simplicity, and wheelhorse tractors. Well worth fixing up. I have found most parts on ebay and some still available through MTD.

Go to Garden Tractors Photo section on YT and put in MTD 990. I believe you'll find what you are looking for.

I have had several wheel horse tractors and it looks like a very early wheel horse.

From the few of them I've seen, they appear to be one tractor MTD did right! Heavy duty rigs, well built.

I have 15 Bolens tractors, and I don't know of any that look like that :D

It's definitely an MTD. That bulge on the hood that covers the front of the starter/generator is a dead giveaway.

That tractor could have been sold under any number of names.

It's one of the MTD 990 series tractors.

Thanks, guys; looks to be an MTD!
I hope the engine has a functioning compression release. Got to be hard to turn over a single cylinder 18hp engine!

If the starter/generator is working right it won't have any trouble turning it over.

The largest B&S cast iron single is a 16 hp but they are a horse of an engine with lots and lots of torque, they run very nice and with good spark and a good carb they start easy and run great.
