My mother just picked up a 1984 john deere 420 hydro lawn tractor, are these good tractors and is there anything we need to look out for?

Watch for engine oil leaks behind the blower housing. A leak will plug the fins on the engine and those Onan engines over heat very fast. That makes them drop valve seats.

Have an 1988 model going on 2000 hrs only problems I"ve have so far is tractor creeps fwd or backward in park at times. Done a Linkage adjustment but did"nt last long. Must have some worn parts?
But other than that there it"s been a great mower.
Really depends how the last person took care it before your mother got it.
