First thing to do is post mod/type numbers of eng,the intek is/was made in single cyl/twin cyl versions,we have no idea what you have.

Next give a better description of your term erratic as far as eng operation.

1-eng surges/hunts for it's speed or won't idle.

2-eng over speeds/slows down or dies when load applied.

3-eng slow cranking/hard starting.

4-knocking/rapping sounds when eng running.

A better description of problem can help us determine/narrow down possible source of problem to timing issue, ign system, fuel system or possible mech problem outside/inside eng.

The model number is 31P677. Type number is 0804-B1. Code number is 080616ZD. It is a single cylinder. When it runs, it sounds like it is constantly backfiring. It's like as if it has a blown head gasket, but I don't think that's the problem because it still has good compression.

The 1st thing to do is check valve clearance as matt said, clearance is checked/set when piston PAST tdc of compression stroke & 1/4" into it's downward travel,if resetting valves doesn't cure problem, next check flywheel key, same may be bent/sheared changeing ign timing,if key ok I would then suspect a problem in fuel system, possible causes,plugged/restricted fuel filter,dirt/water in tank plugging/restricting outlet, bad lines between tank/carb,weak fuel pump(if eng has)dirt/water in carb bowl/internal passages in carb body, sticking float, leaking float valve, dirt in float needle seat, air leak at carb mounting gasket.

If not a fuel system problem other possible causes, leaking rather than a blown head gasket, worn cyl/rings,scored cyl walls, worn valve guides, valves leaking/sticking due to carbon buildup on stems, valves & valve seats,bad/damaged valve seat,warped/damaged valve, worn valve guides, before pulling head consider doing a leakdown test on eng,may help you pinpoint an internal cyl/ring problem, leaking valves or a leaking/blown head gasket.

I found the problem. The choke lever that goes into the carburetor is missing the return spring. The engine was running in constant choke, causing the erratic operation.
