Howdy,
I picked up what the guy said is a ST10 Sears lawn tractor with a plow blade for $75. Rear axle and rear wheels are heavy duty but the engine has been changed. The engine is a Briggs 11HP electronic ign, model 252707 type 0625-01 code 89022111. It runs and drives but I can"t get the carb adjustment right, it starts and idles OK but when going from slow to fast it sputters and blows black smoke for a few seconds then takes off.
Any ideas?, and should I waste my time on this machine? I kinda like the power this thing has in low gear.
Thanks,
Bob S.

The carb needs to be adjusted its set to rich the idle adjustment screw is located just below mt flange behind the filter tube the starting point is 1 1/4 turns out, then get the engine to full RPM's and adjust the main jet located at the bottom of the float bowl on the front of the carb. screw it in about 1/8th of a turn until the engine runs nice and smooth, then see how it runs when advancing the throttle.
The ST 10 is a very tuff well built tractor and Sears sold many many attachments for them.
GB in MN

I agree with MNGB, sounds like the carb just needs an adjustment.
And if it runs, and you say it does, and the transmission is OK, No you are definitely NOT wasting your time.In any decent shape at all, it is worth more than you paid for it.
