Gilson with B S engine

When turning the key to start there is no sound, no click, nothing battery is OK. This is a 16 HP horizontal engine a 1976 model

Do a voltage drop test using a multimeter.

First, check the fuse(s).

Then, make sure power is getting to the small wire that goes to the solenoid from the ignition switch when you turn the key to crank.

Then, check for loose wires at ignition and solenoid.

Last, do the voltage drop test.

If it was working fine last time you used it, more than likely, the battery cables and connections need to be cleaned. Could be the solenoid finally bought the farm. Each can be tested before replacing.

Me and I think Hal have the same tractor.

Do you have an electric starter or starter/ generator? I think the 16hp tractors had electric starters. Use a hydrometer and check all the battery cells. They should read around 1.270 on a fully charged battery. If one has a reading of 1.100 you need a new battery. Clean all those battery connections until they're shiny. Do you have to press a pedal on the left side when making a start? I have that on my 14hp Wards tractor that grounds the solenoid. Use a volt meter and make sure there's voltage on your starter switch when you twist the key. Hal

Here are some points that may be overlooked why the engine may not crank on a Gilson tractor. This covers the 16 hp model 53027 and 53028. Hal

I noticed that's hard to read so here's what they recommend if the engine doesn't crank. Hal

1. Make sure your Neutral/Brake pedal is depressed so engine will crank.
2. Be sure the PTO lever is disengaged by pulling lever toward the seat.

Hi Fred, check that the safety switch is working, it is located directly below the battery, you'll need to remove the battery to see it. It consist of a roll pin about 2" long in the clutch shaft with a light spring with a wire to goes to the solenoid, sometimes the spring gets in front of the roll pin and no contact is made, if that the case simply move the spring to behind the roll pin (toward the rear of tractor). If the spring is where it should be make sure it has good contact they also lose contact and won't work concision, grease or oil etc.

I WISH TO THANK ALL RESPONDERS RROBERT, EL TORO AND MNGB. SOME SUGGESTIONS I HAD ALREADY DONE AND OTHERS WERE HELPFUL. THE CULPRIT WAS THE SAFETY SWITCH.
AGAIN THANKS. YOU ARE A GREAT GROUP OF MEN.
