6.5 vs 6.75 hp briggs?

Is there any difference in shaft length or diameter of a 6.5 vs 6.75 hp quantum briggs? My boy has a JD push mower and his 6.75 hp quantum briggs blew up. I found a guy who has a used 6.5 briggs. He thinks they won't interchange. It would be easy to tell if my boy didn't live an hour and a half away.

There could be a difference in shaft size/diam depending on what briggs was offering/had a special price on or what mower mfg specified when eng ordered,it's not uncommon for eng in same/close hp range to have different length/diam shafts.

Get the mod/spec numbers of bad eng & used eng, goto link below, look up mod/spec# of each eng,see if crank the same pn for both eng,if crank shaft different length, diam or made differently the pn's will be different, this is at least a start.

Even though your son lives 1-1 1/2 hrs away it might be wiser to go pickup mower/have him drop off at your house & check out eng before buying a replacement,if your son is anything like mine & has little/no mech knowledge & two left hands any type of mech problem can quickly turn into a mountain when it's only a mole hill depending on what he considers eng blowing up,fix may be as simple as valves need an adj if an ohv eng or a leaking/blown head gasket, stuck breather valve, leaking float valve in carb dumping gas into crankcase raiseing oil level in crankcase causeing eng to smoke or some other simple fix.

Joe, that's the plan. Either he will come to my house the second weekend in October or I'll see him at the end of October.

His 6.75 is a 22 mm shaft, 3 5/16 long, a 1/4 long key way and 2 other key ways.
