What I think you would call the crank case vent, out of the blue started leaking massive amounts of oil down the back of the engine. Had to order a new black piece, which was very loose and it let oil come out.

Why would it just start leaking all at once?

Just age/heat & normal wear/tear,neoprene/plastic parts with time/heat & being exposed to oil tend to shrink, crack & age harden/take a set, once this happens neoprene/plastic parts can't follow expansion/contraction of block & a leak develops, especially if same subject to pressure. If you look where breather valve is located it's subject to large varations of expansion/contraction due to temp change & also because it's under flywheel & and gets little/no cooling air compared to many of the other eng parts, valve probably has had a small leak for some time that now has turned into a big one,it's no big deal, another common leak point on many eng due to age, heat & oil is the O ring at bottom of dip stick tube,in addition looking at overall condition of eng/equipment it's mounted on this eng has been around a while & spent an unfair amount of time out in the weather & large varations in temp which also affect life of neoprene/plastic parts.

Listen to Joe, he's got it. Same thing happens on other brands too. Between the heat, vibration, oils and solvents and the fact a lot of this stuff is contracted out at low bid...sooner or later it's gonna leak. The days of Pops Briggs that ran with only an oil change and the occasional plug for 50 years are long gone. Now we have stuff where the expected life span is measured in hours- and they don't go past 2 digits!

Joe- you've given a couple of really good answers I noticed in the past few days. Kudos!

you are right about being left outside. I think it's wrong to leave any tool, tractor, mower, even bicycles outside. Rain does a lot of damage.

Come to think of it, when I was using it, I smelled hot rubber. The string trimmer had sat for a long time. Got hot the rubber must have gotten smaller, like you said. Thanks.

George, I was traveling East on RT 46 out of Terra Haute last month. I cannot remember what little town was nearby but there was a place on the south side of rt46 loaded with old lawn mowers all around red barn- are you familiar with this?

Not really, but I'm familar with location. First little place would be Riley, Cory, then Bowling Green. Were you on your way to Bloomington?

actually on the way to Virginia, got off I70 and took 46 over to 74 for a stop in Northern KY. The place looked like he had to have everything related to riding mowers. I was going to stop there on the way back but instead came back on 64. I was glad I took 46, saw some real nice country. Crops were looking good through there too! Much better than further south along 64 near the IL line.

Kornfused,
You have me CONFUSED! I went to google maps and enlarged it to see smaller roads. I couldn't find any 74 going to KY. Indiana has an I74 but it's north of I70. Most roads in Indiana that are even # run east and west. Odd# go north and south.

We haven't had an inch of rain total Aug and Sept. Need it. May be too late for corn. It's turning. Seed corn has already been picked.

Look at a map. If you picked up an interstate going to KY, I think you got on I65. Then if you were going to Florida, you will hop on I75 at some piont.

I googled Cold Springs, KY. You are right, but no idea why you took 46 to Bloomington. That's way out of the way. Google maps shows taking I70 to Indy, 465 around indy to exit 69, then Interstate 74 to Cincinnati, Ohio.

Back to your question, where was the mower place?
George

I was on I70 since Independence MO and wanted off the race track to sloooowwww down and enjoy some scenery. I had told the wife the drive is part of the vacation, not just the destination. So 46 was a real nice ride. When I left my brother's place I took AA 9 down the eastern edge of Ky, again beautiful country and little traffic - wanted nothing to do with I75. Now as for the mower place, I was wondering if you were familiar with it?
