well I wish I had good news to pass along, however - the bendix hung up. got that free but now the starter will not spin at all. Tried hot wire from pos batt post straight to starter = nothing. Pulled the starter apart, nothing looks burned???

well durn it... did ya try to hook up the ground then at the same time? eliminating the body ground .. go directly to engine with both ends .. If that works then we can back track wiring .

As old roy said either run a ground wire to starter along with pos(+) wire, also check that existing connection for neg of battery has a clean/tight connection where it bolts to chassis/eng block.

If starter motor still won't turn after doing this the problem is in starter, without knowing mod# of eng & starter pn tecumseh used several internal brush holder designs,4 brush holders/brushes mounted on a card,or 2-4 brush holders fastened to case of starter, all of the above share two common problems,at least 2 brushes stuck/sticking in holders due to carbon/grease in holder or brushes so worn that they are hanging on wires & not touching commutator on motor armature,in the case of sticking brushes same can be cleaned with carb/brake cleaner,if brushes worn,if holders mounted to case brushes replaced as a set,if holders/brushes mounted on a card, then complete assembly replaced as a unit.

Other things to check for in starter, wire loose/broken to battery terminal, worn bearings,if you're looking for a quick fix replace starter with new/used unit.

Mr. Konfused,
I knew a man if someone called a starter drive a bendix, they were given a lecture on the incorrect nomenclature of the part that was being discussed.

ok, the pinion gear was hung up in the flywheel and would not retract. removing the entire starter did not release it. I now have it retracted but the starter will not engage even on bench test to spin the pinion gear.

Does the armature turn freely by hand? Can you move the pinion on the shaft without excessive force?

IF....the armature turns freely, that would indicate that the bushings/bearings are not binding. The pinion on these starters is generally moved by centrifugal force from the spinning motion of the armature when the starter is energized. That removes a stuck pinion as a cause of the problem. Potentially, the armature could have an internal short. The field coils could be grounding where they should not if your starter uses field coils instead of a permanant magnet field.
You would need a growler to test the armature for shorts. Simple economics and practicality would have me looking for a replacement starter, and putting that one on the bench to work on later.

Final on this mower. I am selling it. Local guy advertises he buys old mowers, I am gonna give him a call. Since Techumseh went out of buisness you cannot finds parts. Bendix is bad and must buy complete new starter - $180.00 - don't want to put this much money in it.
Thank you everyone for your assistance!
