intek valves adjustment

I could use some help adjusting the valves on my 24HP Intek. It started when I bought the engine with a broken piston rod. I replaced it and have set the valve clearance to .005 1/2" past TDC on the compression stroke. The engine starts but the valves are loud and appear to be loose when I check then again. When I readjust them I lose compression. It"as if adjusting them in the wrong position. I"m sure it" s a simple fix I just can"t see what Im doing wrong. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks

not familiar with this engine, but valves are adjusted at tdc on compression stroke on any engine. whats this 1/2" past thing? .005 is a small clearance and requires steady hands. also once clearance is set a .006 feeler should not go. thats why its called a go no go guage. you also might be doing this on the exhaust stroke thats why your getting goofy readings.

What you're thinking of is the 1 cyl briggs ohv eng, valves are set after piston past TDC of compression stroke & piston 1/4" into downward travel, this insures that tappets are clear of cam lobes & acr cam.

On the twin intek eng the valves are set with pistons AT TDC,bring piston on #1 cyl up to TDC of compression stroke(both valves closed)set clearance to .005" on intake & exh valves, torque adj screw & jam nut to 60 in lbs, bring piston of #2 cyl to TDC of compression stroke & set valve clearances/tighten set screw/jam as above.

IF you didn't mark push rods before removing, before setting valve's make sure aluminum push rods on intake valves.

Thanks Joe. I think you just solved my problem. The service book I have shows the 1/2" for the twin 24 hp. I plan to set them again at TDC exactly . Maybe that will do it. I was starting to struggle
