A new Battery isn't much help for my starting problem a and now PTO will kick off when mowing and I have to re-engage to mow. Do I just need a new PTO switch and a solenoid. I an open to all advice.

old piddler:

You make NO mention that the tractor is not charging. With a new battery and no charging issues, then I would suggest that you check your Battery Cable connections, especially the ground. Make sure all cable connections are clean, polished, to bare metal, and tight.

RB, I put a new battery in yesterday and just like with the old one I have to try several times to get it to cranking, everything seems to be tight and clean. The PTO kicking out is a new problem that developed after I changed the battery. Sometimes it will stay in for several minuets and other times I have to hold the switch up a few seconds and then it will engage. Thanks for your reply.

i have a 1863 that had the same problem.
check the fuse. not so much the fuse as the fuse holder. they get corroded inside.
i dont think your selenoid is bad.
and it might cure the pto as well.
my fuse holder melted and the fuse was still good.

hope you find the problem. good luck.

Bill can you give me a little more detail, I searched for a service manual for the 1864 but never found one.I'm guessing its in thousands like you might check point gap on the old cars. Thanks for the reply.

I will check all those items in the morning and let everyone know if I find anything. Also by then I might have the PTO clutch gap and get that checked. Thanks to everyone for the quick response, a little good advice goes a long way.

The battery is charging, I tried it this morning and it started, turned it off and it started again so I mowed a while and the PTO started kicking out. Both wires to battery are tight and post clean. I see the springs on the pto clutch with what I suppose are adjusting bolts for the gap. My problem is I'm not sure how to check the gap or what it's supposed to be. The day I put the battery in was the same time the pto started giving problems, the starting issue has been there since I bought the tractor a couple, years ago but it always started if I had the patients to keep trying.

some tractors use ground wires other than the battery ground , look for a group or even single wires that are grounded. Customer had a jd that would run for 30 to 40 minutes then the pto would drop out wait 30 minutes then go again, also had a slow cranking problem sometimes found a pack of 6 wires grounded under battery box all crusty cleaned them and all the problems went away.

Good advice, I will get under that battery box and have a look, it wouldn't start at all yesterday after sitting a while. Since I bought the tractor used I know very little about working on it.Thanks for the tip.

My guess is the PTO switch is your problem. When it will not start, hold the key in the start position and wiggle the pto switch. Had same problem on my 582 and 1863. Also check to see if it has a micro switch on the reverse side of the directional lever. Could be making the PTO relay trip off.

Anon I believe your correct about the PTO switch being at least part of the problem. I did the wiggling of the switch with key in start position and it started, it started several times after that without bothering the PTO switch. I'm noticing PTO kicks out mostly when I go from reverse to fwd but not always.I don't have a lot of time to spend with it but I believe we are getting there a little at a time.

Good. There is a micro switch on the shift lever that is supposed to turn PTO off when you go into reverse-PITA!!! Could be it is out of position and turning PTO off--I bent mine out of the way so it's away from lever. Just be very careful backing up while mowing.

ANON,I tried several times and each time the tractor starter wont turn I turn key to start and wiggle PTO switch and it starts.I'm guessing I need to order a PTO switch. I will wait for you to advise me if I need to look for other problems or order the PTO switch. also I see a message that tells me to fill out a form below to register my name and password but I don't see a form.
