Toe Problem with Sears Craftsman YT 4500 mower

Has anybody run into the same problem I have with my mower? I have a tight turn Craftsman YT 4500 Model 28858 26 H.P 54" cut mower that I really like but the front wheels are toeing out and creating a plowing effect. The tie rods do not appear to be adjustable or bent. Is there anywhy to fix this problem? Someone on the internet stated they do make adjustable replacement tie rods for these, has anyone tried them? How do you like them? Thanks for your help

When John Deere released the L-series mowers they had non adjustable tie rods.Once them machines got some hrs. on them the very same issue developed you're having.Deere issued a service update offering adjustable tie rod to address the problem. It corrected the problem 100%.If Craftsman or an aftermarket co.is offering adjustable tie rods,it should fix you right up.

I believe they do make adjustable tie rods for them. Is it a chance the bushings are bad in the spindles causing the toe out issue? I have heard that as well.

If the spindle bushings have a lot of wear and causing the toe out, you should be able to turn the wheels so they're straight by hand. Hal

I can turn the wheels so they are straight but they will not stay in that position and go right back to their toe out position, so it is a good chance the bushings are worn out badly. Makes sense to me as it does not appear the tie rods are bent. Sounds good and thanks for the information, I appreciate it!

Yeah check the spindle bushings. If there worn badly replace them.BTW check the wheel bushings as they could be worn out as well.

If Sears doesn't have new bushings your local machine can probably make new bushings. Before
ball joints were used on vehicles they used king pins and bushings. Even though they had zerk fittings for greasing the bushing still would wear causing tire wear. I put them in a 1951 Chevy and an old mechanic told me not to remove the old bushings just drive down the old bushings with the new bushings. The same thing on the bottom and install the new king pins. These kits were available from Sears. Ball joints would wear over time as my 57 Chevy had them. Hal
