Advertise it on Craigslist or Ebay.
For market value, it depends on a lot of things.
I have been trying to sell some Bolens of the same vintage and haven't had much success
It seems that people won't spend much, unless they can get it for $50.00 or so.

If it's an 800 with the Wisconsin S-8D engine it has to be either a 1964 or 1965. The '64 would be be the model 188-01 and the '65 the model 188-02.

Bolens first marketed the 800 in 1963 with the Wisconsin S-7D engine.

The only Bolens tube frame built in 1962 was the 600 with a Briggs 6 horse in it.

Thanks for the info. I will re-check my owners manuals / engine and tractor model and serial #s.
Will get back to you.
Thank you.

R.W.,

You may be able to pickup current issue of Lawn and Garden Tractor Magazine at Tractor Supply . That is where I got my copys until I finally subscribed to it.

On my 1964 800, the data tag is on the trans cover, between the seat and gearshift.

I never heard of an 800 being made with an 8 horse engine. I used to work for a Bolens dealer in Middletown, NY early 70s and recall swapping 8s and 10s into some 800s since they lacked power. There were two model 800s and both came new with Wisconsin S7D engines with 7 1/4 horse. The 900s came with the S8D Wisconsins with 8 1/4 horse.

If there is an exception to this - I'd like to see evidence. I've never seen one at our dealership and I've only got paperwork for two model 800s. Both are 7 1/4 horse.

They show up for sale now and then in my area of central NY. Asking price is usually in the $300 range even with a bunch of attachments. That is not counting the HD rear tiller that often brings a couple of hundred just in itself (the HD chain drive and not the cheaper worm-drive).

The newer and bigger tube frames up in the 12-14 HP range often bring a bit more as long as they have Wisconsin engines and not Tecumseh.

If you give your email address, I can send you a PDF of the 1964 Bolens brochure. It gives the specs for the 800 and the 900, which shows BOTH of them having an 8.25 horse Wisconsin engine.

The 1964 800 is the subject of a lot of confusion. Part of it because Bolens made a mistake in a list that they made available which called the model 188 a 900, and they never corrected it.

The 800 and 900 were almost identical. The engine, trans, etc. were all identical. The only thing different was the 900 had a fiberglass seat pan/fender and larger wheels/tires.

In the last three years I've been learning a LOT about the Bolens tube frames and large frames, and currently own 13 of them. All are tube frames or large frames except for my 1964 Estate Keeper articulated.

You say the 800 and 900s had the same engines. No
they did not - at least not all. I have two 800s
here and worked on many at our Bolens dealership.
All that I ever saw had S7D engines. All the 900s
that I witnessed had S8D engines. I still have
several S7D engines I removed from 800s years back
since they were so underpowered. We put a lot of
Tecumseh or Briggs 12-14 horse engines in as
replacements.

Obviously I have not seen every one ever produced
and there may be exceptions -but certainly not all
800s shared engines with all 900s.

The Sonny Bolens Website looks like it's got it right when it comes to engines in 800s and 900s.

It goes along with any I saw while working for a Bolens dealer when these tractors were only 8-10 years old.

Bolens made the 800 for 3 years.

In 1963 there were two models:
186-01 with a manual start S-7D
187-01 with an electric start S-7D

In 1964 there was just 188-01 with the S-8D.

In 1965 there was the 188-02 with the S-8D

The 900 was built for two years, 1964 as the 189-01 and 1965 as the 189-02. Both had the S-8D.

1965 was also the only year that Bolens marketed the 1000 which had the Wisconsin TR10D, and had the hi-lo trans as opposed to the two belt system that the 800 and 900 used for high and low range.

1965 was also the last year for the round hoods, as Bolens went to the square hoods in 1966 when the 1050 appeared.

Actually Sonny's has it WRONG, and is a source for a lot of the confusion regarding the 64 & 65 800.

I hope that this is large enough for you guys to see. It's a page from the 1964 Bolens brochure that gives the specs of the 800.

You said in one of your posts (in this thread) that the 800s and 900s had "identical" engines. That is not true. Some may of, but not all.
Wisconsin was marketing the S7 and S8 series as "interchangeable engines" and I suspect at some point, Bolens just used the S8Ds. I know we swapped quite a few S8Ds into 800s that came originally with S7Ds. When the 800 was first built, the S8D wasn't available - as I recall.

You are correct as far as [b:8e677c3464]1963[/b:8e677c3464] is concerned. The 800 did indeed have the S-7D, as your paperwork shows.

However, in 1964 and 1965, the 800 and 900 BOTH used the S-8D-231552 engine.

The early 800's (1963 gold & white) used the Wisc S7D engines.

The later 800's (1964-1965 brown & white) used the Wisc S8D engines.

HOWEVER, there was a Bolens Letter issued to dealers explaining that some 800's were shipped from the factory with an S7D in place of the S8D.

I don't remember the reason why - possibly a shortage of S8D's. ...These tractors were identified with a "-7" suffix added after the tractor model number.

Also, Bolens production did not always match what was shown in the brochures. ...Even production info published by Bolens has numerous errors.

I, too, worked in a Bolens dealership while these tractors were being sold new. ...I do not recall ever seeing a 1964 or 1965 Bolens 800 with the S7D installed at the factory. ....That is not to say that a different dealership (or distributor)could not have received a batch of the 800's equipped with the S7D.
