Coil on Kohler 15 hp. engine

How can I check the coil for my Cub Cadet with 15 hp. Kohler engine on it? I have the coil off & have checked with multimeter from plug wire to each of the contacts on the coil and have 0 ohlms so I'm kinda thinking it's bad. It's been tooooooo long since I've worked on small engines to remember. Keith

Dunno. I just replaced same coil. Engine would run, sputter and then turn off for customer. I could never replicate it. It started and ran fine for me. Finally, it stalled on him and would not start again. I drove to his house quickly and tested it for spark with a timing light. Zero spark. I hauled it home and removed the shroud. Disconnected the kill wire and tried again. 0 spark. I installed a used coil on it and he has been having no issues since.

Make sure the magnet on flywheel is strong. Put coil back on with plug touching the engine. .010(business card) airgap. Leave kill wire disconnected. Crank engine and check for spark. Use a brand new sparkplug for this test too.

I've got the engine off the mower. Mouse had built a nest on the coil and flywheel (what a mess) I have a test plug that I connect to the plug wire, it has a clip on it to hook to ground. Which wire is the kill wire. I haven't been in to one of these newer Cubs so I'm kinda lost. Thanks for the help, Keith

Should only be one small black wire connected to the back of the coil. It should also be the only wire that will disconnect from coil. The sparkplug wire will not come off coil without doing damage.

Center of coil near sparkplug wire.

Or are you talking about a car type coil?

Test for power with engine installed.

First thing to do is clean the points. Then test coil while on engine using a test light. Or, swipe the coil from your neighbors old Ford truck and see if the engine will run.

God, I knew that. These senior moments are beginning to become just a little longer than moments LOL. thanks, Keith

Just remembered. If the plug wire is chewed, tape it with electrical tape and test as mentioned above. The mouse nest is usually damp enough to ground out the sparkplug wire. Could be the issue you are having.
