After 15 years of flawless service this afternoon my JD 275's Kawasaki engine surged and died. When I lifted the hood it seemed hotter than normal. I left it sit for a couple hours, then when I went back and looked at it I saw what the problem was. There's a sheet of foil over foam padding under the hood. The foil had come loose and dropped down over where the air shroud fan pulls air to blow over the engine. Thankfully after it was cooled off and I removed the foil it's running normally again. Just a warning for others with this type of set up, beware of the air inlet getting blocked. Would be good to have an engine temperature gauge.
