MTD will not move

Having a problem with 2006 model MTD 13.5 HP 6-Speed Varible transmission Model # 13AC 762 F729. Sister was mowing and it stopped moving. She said every time she lets the clutch out it will jump forward or backward about one foot and stop. Probably has less than 10 hours since I replaced both drive belts with MTD belts. I have not looked at it, since it is about 30 miles away. I assume since it will move some, the belts should be okay, and that it might be a spring or something that is not keeping tension on the belts.

Anybody have any idea what it might be?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

It is possible that a tension spring could have broken or came loose, but then again, in that situation it doesn't seem like it would move at all. I would check the vari-drive pulleys as they may not be operating properly. Unfortunately, the best way to tell will be to "eyeball" it. Good luck, and keep us posted as to what you find.

After checking belts, springs, pulleys etc & every thing appears to be ok/working,pull both rear wheels & check that one of the woodriff/sq keys that connects wheel hub/tire rim to axle isn't rounded off/sheared,also check that keyways in axle & wheel hub/tire rim aren't worn/sloppy.

It doesn't have a freewheel lever under the seat like my Hydro Murray, does it? (I'd think not with the variable drive but worth checking for anyhow)

The problem was that the small spring toward the front of the mower that pulls the tension on the idler arm with the Varibale pulley and idler pulley (I think both pulleys are on the same arm) that holds the tension on the drive belts had come loose from where it hooks to the right side frame rail. (There is also a large spring that pulls toward the rear of the mower) When I hooked it back up, the spring seemed to be weaker that what I thought it should be. Maybe that is the reason it came loose. I mowed my yard with it and the belts seemed to slip a few times while going up a steep grade. I think I will replace the Spring or both springs.

Thanks for you thoughts on this problem.
