ls55 ford or wheel horse 260

I have a Ford New Holland LS55, same as a Toro Wheelhorse 260. The problem is that the steering is messed up. I can turn the steering wheel almost a 1/2 turn before it starts to turn the wheels. Then to turn the other way, back around a 1/2 turn before it will start to turn the wheels the other way. So basically, I have about a 1/2 turn play in the steering. Where do I start to find out what is wrong. Also, sometimes it will catch and the steering wheel will not turn.

The first thing you have to do is isolate area of play in steering system to either between fan gear at bottom of steering column support plate & front end of tractor or in steering column assembly itself, the easiest way to do this is turn/have someone turn steering wheel & watch steering column & tie rods to front of tractor to see what's moving/not moving & take it from there as to checking for worn/bad gears, bushings,u joint or broken/missing roll pins/shaft keys in column assembly or bad spline on columm shaft/steering wheel.
