JD 214 Variator spring adjustment

My 1986 JD 214 tractor clutch pedal creeps down under load when pulling or going up an incline. I've had the variator apart, cleaned, and everything moves freely, and, installed both primary and secondary belts from John Deere. I want the variator less senstive. Do I tighten the variator spring or loosen it? The spring that tightens the secondary belt is fine. Any assistance is appreciated.

Leave it alone. That is the way it is supposed to work. Automatic movement of the variator changes the pulley ratio, gearing down to keep from lugging the engine.

Tighten it. You want to make the distance from the eye to the bracket shorter. Earlier JD variators were not adjustable. If that doesn't help you will want to replace the big spring.

Have you adjusted the variator by placing your lever in the 5th notch and then loosen the 3/4" bolt behind the pop in plug while cranking or running the engine? Alowing your pedal to return to it"s correct position.

Hello everyone, thanks for your assistance. Mark-Ia, I did adjust the variator as you described. I tightened the spring about 1/2 inch and now it is working fine. Thanks again!
