What to replace 39Y.O. Cub Cadet?

Bought my IHC Cub Cadet new in 1974. Rebuilt 12 hp engine few years ago. Now, deck is failing. Also have Craftsman & J.D. It seems each time I use the Craftsman it hits a rock, bends a blade and/or busts the spindle--not sturdy enuff! The J.D. just doesn't run. I HAVE LOTS OF fist-sized to foot sized rocks, mostly flint. What riders can/should I look to replace the Cadet? I HATE the absence of a steering wheel too. Thanks for the advice.

I like the 700 series JD, Simplicity still builds a good mower. I am not talking about throw away mowers I mean ones that cost 10,00.00 new, and I don t buy new. There is always someone one CL or the local paper that needs to sell one at half what they paid for it(or less) I have three JDs and the newest one has 1000hr on it.

If rocks that big a problem consider looking on ebay, craigslist, several local dealers for a dr/similar make tow behing/walk behind brush trimmer/string trimmer & rig up to back of tractor or a cub sickle bar mower attachment,if you can find one.

I'd go find another deck for the Cub. The new stuff since the late 80's is all garbage or so insanely expensive it's not worth it. You might be better off buying a whole parts machine in the end for a few hundred. Dump the Crapsman and Deere to help pay for it.

If the rocks are that big you should set the mower higher or the same thing is going to happen. Hal

That's what I'd do. It's not like those decks are rare - I've got 3-4 leaning up against the wall in my shop. Any of the wide frame decks will work - it seems the 1X9 and 1X8 decks are much heavier than the "shape stamped" decks on the Quietline Cub Cadets.

You need my Toro Whirlwind 31" mower with reverse. You may dull the blade, but you won't bend the shaft. Hal

Thanks all! Think I'm gonna find a 4' or 5' three point shredder for the bigger area and look for a deck for the Cub Cadet. Hmmm, now where to find a deck to fit a 39 year old mower . . .
