JD 214 Engine

John Deere 214 tractor with Kohler engine. I can buy this for cheap. The guy rebuilt the engine, rebored it,replaced the piston etc. It only lasted one summer and now it smokes and uses oil. He took the cylinder head off and says that in one summer it wore a significant ridge at the top of the piston ring travel area. I dont know what he may have done wrong but heres my question. Could I oversize it again? What sizes of piston are available and is it recommended to bore it that much oversize? I'll have to verify but I think it's currently at .010 inch over size.

I think most small engines can be bored more than .010 oversize. Best contact a Kohler dealer or small engine supply house for specifics.

You can go out to 0.30 oversize on that engine no problem. I have no Idea why it would wear the cylinder wall that quickly

I use the same supplier on Ebay. I've rebuilt 4 engines using his kits - all are still running well today. Local "tinkerer" that rebuilds engines for people started using the same guy - I bet he's done at least 20-25 using those those kits.

I wonder if the guy installed a .010 oversized piston after boring the engine. New rings will keep it from burning oil at first but a standard piston in an oversized cylinder will cause some weird wear issues.

I bought an extra K301 engine with a Cub 125 that had supposedly been rebuilt by the "best machine shop" in Wichita. All it needed was to be installed. I started it and ran it for a couple minutes before tearing into it. They had installed a standard rod after turning the crank .010 undersized. It knocked like a Jehovah's Witness wanting to spread the word.

Here you go:

He has the kit in standard, .010, .020 and .030 oversized for the same price. Some of the kit comes from Kohler and the the rest from Stens.

The complete rebuild kit with the valves is $104. If you don't need the valves the kit is only $82.
