john deere quits

I have a john deere 210 with a 241 koler engine. After you turn mower deck on it will mow alright for 2 to 5 minutes then starts to die. You turn mower deck off, and if will stay running. You can repeat this process several times. Any body have any idea what we be wrong with this ?

I would suspect a bearing in the mower drive system is dry and locking up.Maybe the points need filed or replaced.Dan.

Do you have battery ignition using an auto type coil? If you do your battery may be getting weak. Check for fire to your plug asap when it quits running. Hal

My first thought on this would be fuel starvation. Consider: engine uses fuel at a greater rate while operating a mowing deck. Reducing the load by disengaging the mower results in reduced rate of fuel consumption.

If the fuel flow were somehow restricted (partially plugged filter, kinked line, or marginal fuel pump), it may be able to keep up with the fuel demand at idle or light load condition, but not able to meet the fuel requirement under load.

Thanks for the all the input. It was the seat switch, I had jumped around it, and I guess it was coming loose some of the time. runs good now.

Glad you found it so quick. Have a 112 that was acting the same after working about an hour. If I caught it on the first cough & dropped the clutch & idled down it would recover for a few minutes, then do it again. If I didn't catch it, it would die & not restart, no spark, unless let it rest half an hour. Last time it died it wouldn't restart at all, winched it on the trailer & hauled it home.
Coil dead. Went to parts store, got matching coil. Turns out previous owner had put on coil that needed external resister. Went back for a NAPA IC 14 SB coil, no resister needed. No problem for 10 years now.
