Troybilt tines

Have just over 80 hours on my newer model Troybilt horse rototiller. In not too abrasive soil should the tines be worn out already? Bill

I've had a Simplicity front tine tiller for over
30 years, wore out a 5 HP briggs 20 years ago,
replaced with a 4 HP K90 kohler, still on same
tines, and Kohler engine.

When I was tilling gardens beside my own I mentioned to a welder friend about the tines wearing down. He told me to pull the tines before they were worn too much and he would build them up using hard facing. Sure made a big difference in tine wear. They didn't look that great, but they tilled fine. Doing the hard weld rod thing works wonders. In the northeast corner of PA it is coal contry. It is real hard coal. The other thing in the ground is full of caborundum! You cannot beleve how fast it will grind up equipment! Hard weld rod sells by the bucket load up there. Used to sell to the rental stores many years ago. They had zig zags of hard rod all over the sides of buckets and the teeth of diggers and such. Ditch witch makes a special hard temper ditchin chain just for those areas. jeffcat
