Briggs 18HP twin, intermittent spark, coil touching flywheel

I have a mower with horizontal opposed twin II. Just mowing along and started wanting to die. isolated to intermittent spark by using a light tester. Gap to the magnet and top part of coil is next to nothing. However, I can move the flywheel or crank and get about .005 clearance. My guess is the play in the crank bearing is causing contact and killing spark.

Question is should I adjust and run it or since this happened suddenly, assume that bearing is going way south? Is this normal? Would contact of the coil certainly kill spark?

It will kill the coil eventually.

I am guessing you are talking about the pancake 18Hp briggs.

The bearing needs to be replaced or bushing installed. You could try to adjust the airgap to .010 while pushing the flywheel towards the coil. Not sure how long that would work tho. I have done that on junk 10 HP. But your engine is unusual and not easily replaced for cheap.
