I have a Kohler Command 25hp in a JD. It started with a slight
popping sound and a little oil from the exhaust. The popping is
now full time and the burned oil has increased but the oil level
has not changed. Now starting to miss and loosing power.
Where to start looking? Can it Rusty.........
 
My Cub Cadet is in the shop right now. Kohler twin 25hp. Worn cylinder sides, rings, pistons. Started with some oil burning smell then smoke and finally fogged the yard as it was working. Try to catch it now. They tell me parts alone are gonna run $600 or so.
 
Not exactly what I wanted to hear. This engine has only 630 hours on it. I'll run a compression check on it today. Good luck on yours. Make that 330 hours.
 
A lot of techs misdiagnose failed head gaskets as bad rings.

This Kohler in particular liked to eat head gaskets. Check between the cylinder and the drainback port on the head. Also check the flywheel key to make sure it"s not sheared. (a sheared flywheel key won"t make it smoke but will make it run hot and blow head gaskets).
