Warning to Simplicity/AC owners

Just a word of warning- even a little 10hp Briggs has more than enough ooomph to bust up the planetarys in these tractors when you really hang them and have chains on. Twice now I've done this- once when I didn't realize the chains were froze into the dirt and again plowing with the moldboard and chains on trying to rip up an old strawberry bed in dry conditions. I think the chains are best left off. Better spin a bit than break another $300.00 worth of parts.

I don't mean this as a bash on the design, it was my fault entirely. Just a word of warning that this setup really puts a lot of torque on things.

What model do you have, I run chains on my 410, and haven't
had any problems.and I got a 10hp kohler in it. I think the
bevel gear box is the weak spot. I think my rearend or
"planitaries" are pretty tough.

Brilliant post, Harv. I take it you've never broke anything doing something you were sure it'd do. The late 60's Simp/AC tractors have a couple of weak points and one of them is the differential. Occasionally you can find a used one on eBay.

312H AC. They are pretty tough. But nothing is unbreakable. Just sayin'...

(quoted from post at 05:46:28 05/13/13) Some people should let machinery alone if they don't
know its limitations.

And some people should just shut up if they can't offer anything constructive to a discussion.

Are parts available still? My cousin has a 312 and has never
broke anything. I think the 300 and 400 series are about
bulletproof. The one downside, when the get a lot of wear, the
bevel gear box will start to leak, and will need to get shimmed,
and new bearings and seals.rather than that I think there good.

You can still get most anything you need through Sandy Lake Implement. Real good people.

My warning is not to diss the machine or the design, just that you can overload things unintentionally. I know few people who ever lube the planetary or even give it a thought. Just a word to the wise, so to speak.
