Ariens Zoom 1944 Kholer Engine Probelms

I have an Ariens Zoom 1944 w/ a Kholer 19hp engine zero turn mower. It cranks great and while under load, it runs great. However, once the blade is disengaged or if it was not engaged in the first place then the engine rpm's seem to "lunge". It doesn't noticeably affect the speed of the mower itself (and i do mean noticeably. If you pay close attention the mower lunges also, but slightly). As soon as a load is engaged (i.e. the blades) it disappears completely. It doesn't rev. up, but rather it dies off and 'comes back to life' at the proper rpm. It never backfires when it does this either. it reminds me of an auto adjusting carb. that has a spring that's weak or worn. I've adjusted the carb. with no success. It does it relentlessly and every single time I run it. Any idea what is causing it or a fix for it. Thanks,

I think what you are describing is called surging and it is at high idle (fastest speed) but no load. It is not harmful, but to some annoying. Usually enriching the main carburetor load screw 1/8 turn out, or less(for most engines) can help.

On some newer engines cannot make adjustments to the carburetor.

Remove carb & clean out/blow out all internal passages in carb body(may require removing welch plugs & buying replacement plugs/carb kit if carb has plugs). The most common cause of eng surging/hunting for it's speed is plugged/restricted idle passages in carb body, regardless if fixed or adj jet.

Might also want to goto link below & download a service/repair manual for your mod eng,in manual will be instructions to service carb in addition to helping you id make/mod carb as depending on eng mod/sn there may be more than one mfg of carb used on eng.
