SOL has a JD GX 345 has foot pedal for direction. How to keep deck in gear while backing up. Safety, I know. But in small places with lots of forward and backing up, it is a pill.. Thanks in advance for inputs

There should be a key position or separate switch that will allow you to back up with mower engaged.

Unhook the stupid saftey switch, if you don't have an override button.
To my way of thinking all those switches are for dummies that shouldn't be oberating machinery.
I'm not saying you don't know how to operate it, but I hope you know what I mean.

To keep the mower going while in reverse, lift up on the pto switch before backing up. This is called "rio"Reverse Implement Operation.

John Deere didn't have the swithch on the early models. When the neighbor had his he used the old fashion wooden clothes pin. Pull it out to start and put the clothes pin on it. Good as long as you don't have kids operating it.
