has anyone had any experience with alkyd enamel paint? I am planning on using Tractor Supply paint by Majic brand. I have heard that is takes a long time to dry and cure. they sell hardener and reducer for it. also any tips on using it.

The Tractor Supply here started selling the Magic brand of paint.
I don't think its very good paint. The quarts are hard to mix and the spray cans clog up all the time even though they have been shook up good.
I called the company and they did send me a refund.
All TSC did was say they were sorry I was dissatified whith it.

that"s what I am afraid of, if I go that route. I don"t want to spend a lot of money on auto type paint but what a decent paint job.

You might try Rustoleum, if you look hard enough on their website you can find equipment colors. I painted a tractor with IH Red back in 1998 and it sprayed on well and looks pretty good 15 years later. I didn't have any of the issues described in the other pst.

I wouldn't use Majic paint. From what I have heard it's junk. If you want to paint a tractor without breaking the bank use Valspar. It is available online and at some hardware stores.

Look here:

If you can live with the stock colors the acrylic enamels are much better than farm store paints. And the prices aren't all that bad. Add for hardener and reducer and, in most colors, you can get a gallon an 1/4 to 1/3 sprayable mix for under 90 bucks..

Calcubman: It is true of all paints--you get what ya pay for. If ya buy cheap paint, ya gets a cheap finish that doesn't hold up well over time. It is also true: If ya don't know very much about refinishing a piece of equipment, and just go at it blind, you will waste a pile of money on the paint and materials, plus the effects of the paint, if sprayed, on yer lungs, will be bad. I refinished cars for 40 years, and the paint spray got to my lungs. I retired 20 years ago, and now i just use the sponge brushes with Rustoleum paints. Also--if you do decide to spray the paint, with hardener-thats when the isocyanates in the hardener gets into yer lungs, and does funny (well, not funny) stuff to yer breathing apparatus! Sponge brushes forever!!

I use Rustoleum and use their clear enamel as a clearcoat. Works and looks great for years.
