My buddy got his Bolens 1250 running. It had set for ten plus years out side in the elements. It run fairly well. Then the hydro eat the piston followers. It seems the cam had some rust on it and that roughness wore out the piston followers. The parts are over $450 just for the followers.

I am thinking he can buy a complete tractor for that money and have a bunch of left over parts. He needs some better sheet metal too.

So does anyone know of a Bolens 1250 or 1256 that is for sale with a good hydro but maybe a bad engine. I think the hydro/ transmission in the same on all of the large frames. There is only one parts break down on them.

There were 3 different hydros used in the Large frames.

The 'numbered' Large Frame tractors from the 1250 through the 1886-04 had the EATON 12.

The HT18 and HT20 used the SUNDSTRAND 15.

The HT23, and the diesel powerd HT20D, HT22*, and HDT1000* all used the EATON 11, and had a two speed rear end.

BTW, the 1256 is a Tube Frame.

* These two were export only models, and you will most likely never see one. There are two HDT1000s known to be in the States (one of which is mine), and as far as we "Bolens nuts" know, zero HT22s.

The Bolens 1256 used an Eaton 10, hydro.

As Old Buzzard said, the 1250 used the Eaton 12 hydro.

I don"t know if any of the internal parts were common to both models.

Large frames usually bring pretty good $$$ and its not the engine that goes bad as those old Wisconsins were about indestructable. And most large frames I have run across have been run pretty hard.

When it comes down to it...about the only thing that could kill the Bolens Large Frames was NEGLECT. As long as you do the proper maintance, they will last forever.

I have 4 of them. 2 1886s with the Kohler K482 horizontal twin, an HT20D with the 2-cyl Wisconsin/Ducati Diesel, and the HDT1000 with a 3-cyl water cooled Mitsubishi diesel.
