322 electrical alternator or rectifier

Need ideas. I have the tech manual coming BUT wiring plug between alt. and wiring harness got hot as in earlier post. manual says to put meter on 2 wires from alternator and should get 30volt DC. I get nothing at all. If I start tractor you can see the terminals arcing. I have new wiring splice kit but need help before put in. How can I tell if rectifier is bad. If I snap the coupler back together and start tractor the coupler starts to get hot again. Any ideas?

You only get AC voltage at the rectifier with the engine running. You should remove the AC wires from the rectifier and separate them. Make sure the wires aren't touching any metal. Then start the engine and use your volt meter to check fo AC voltage. If you have AC voltage about 30 volts I think your rectifier is defective. Hal

Forgive my stupidity but do you check the voltage on rectifier terminals or the wiring? If I see spark from alternator end of wiring plug I assume it is putting out voltage.

I'm not familiar with the charging system on the yanmar eng, however due to fact eng water cooled I'm assumeing eng has a belt drive water pump & auto style alt to charge battery, the first thing have to determine is if rect/regulator internal in alt,a bolt on unit on alt case or remote mounted on tractor frame,if rect/regulator internal/mounted on alt case it may/may not be serviceable & alt/reg might have to be replaced as a unit. You're probably better off waiting for manual before you damage/burn something up.

Hi Hal-Hey what's it like living in a state that's going to tax you because it rains or doesn't it affect county you live in YET?

They will probably start taxing us if we sleep with our wife. The MD governor just got a gas tax approved to start in July. Last year all bridge and tunnel tolls went up. What use to cost in 1951 when I went to work for the government the toll was a penny in each direction. You bought a book of tickets for 60 cents that was good for a month. We have a transponder now that cost $10.00 and it will rise
to $20.00 in July. If you don't have a transponder the cost be $13.00 to cross the bridge. MD should be the richest state in the US. Hal

Maybe it's time for a tax payer revolt or maybe the south had it right, lynch mobs & go after the epa & state goverment offical's.

I live in nj & they tax you for everything except breathing & that might not be to far away if they can figure out how to do it.State hasn't gotten around to rain tax,but md might give them idea's.

Delaware doesn't have any sales tax. The Dupont's put so much money into the economy they don't need it. MD has a deal now with DE and other states to collect their 6% sales tax. They even have road runners for a better word out looking for cars coming back into MD that may have bought items in DE. My nephew was stopped when they saw a reclining chair in his truck. He had the chair repaired in DE and had a receipt to show them. He didn't tell them it was originally bought in DE. In 2003 I bought 4 Troy Bilt generators from Lowe's in DE. We had a power outage for over a week and generators were scarce and I sold 3 of them. I kept the last generator and had to go to Dover to get it. It was bought and returned to Lowe's
when it would run for 30 seconds and quit. The fuel line was crimped shut behind the gas tank. I only had $200.00 in it. Hal
PS: They were 7550 watt generators.

First things first. If the ends of the wires from the alternator are burnt from an overheated rectifier/regulator you need to fix that first so you are getting a good reading.

Then - if you have good hands and thin terminals at the end of the wires from your multimeter you can do it by sliding the plug back a little on the rectifier terminals. If not, pull the plug off and stick the multimeter terminals into the plug, one on each of the outside connectors. That's where you should have 30 volts or better AC.

To test the rectifier/regulator, you probably need to check the positive and negative battery terminals, again with the engine running. You should have around 14.5 volts DC there.

It"s a little belt-driven permanent magnet alternator that sends AC current to a rectifier/regulator much like is used with under-flywheel alternators.
