Its been my experience that those modules don't work on the old cast iron Briggs, for one thing the cast iron engine's magnets are reverse polarity to the newer engines you can try reversing the + / - leads on the module. Those engine with the external points are very good engines but the points and condemner needs to be in good working order, it could also be the coil that is weak. I'd go back to the points but that's me.

Ok I see you replied as I was posting so please tell me when you say electronic module are you talking about the Nova type points eliminator, or the B&S magnetron electronic system?

Magnetron. In fact, he picked up 2 parts. One is from NAPA and was just supposed to be a new coil. The other is from a hardware/Briggs dealer and is the module. They both look the same, except one has a nodule that would bring it closer to the magnet on the flywheel. Another guy he knows installed one of these on his old Speedex and seems to have the same problem. Sometimes it will start, or not, or if he has it running and shuts it off, it may not start again. Very frustrating!
