Quiet down Craftsman LT4000 w/ automotive muffler?

Curious how much I could quiet down a Craftsman LT4000 lawn tractor exhaust.

It has a 13.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine.

I know that the mechanical noises will remain, but any quieting down will be a plus for riding through a neighborhood park.

I"d prefer to keep the parts limited to what I could find at the local junkyard or otherwise "on the cheap" :)

Ideas/Questions:
- Can I use an automotive style muffler? (Obviously, I"ll have to get creative about adaptors/mounting)
- Would it be worth it?
- Maybe a motorcycle or ATV muffler?
- How concernced should I be about back pressure?
- Should I try and raise the exhaust outlet over my head...i.e. vertical stack?

A stock muffler for that engine, should be all it needs the 13.5 exhaust is directed to the ground for that short distance baffling the noise much more..Is yours rusted out and not working properly?
Tilt hoods with a front stack would be almost imposable , because of no where to brace it for easy access to the engine .

You can expect it to be a little noisy from the seat , but someone standing 50 feet away hears it different .
