110 Volt AC Campbell Hausfield Generator

Hi,

I have a 10 - 15 year old 110 vac generator made by Campbell Hausfield . It is powered by a single cylinder 5 hp verticle shaft Briggs engine . It only has four 110 volt plugs in front of it so it is about a 1500 - 3000 watt generator . Do you have to excite the field coils in it like the older gen sets and welders ? I say no . But my electronics genius friend says yes . It worked when I got it , main bolt through center of generator that attaches the insides of generator that spin to motor crank was missing . I replaced the bolt and it worked So my question is do you have to excite the field coils in " newer " model generators and welders ? Thanks for all and any help.

Thanks,
Whizkid

Sorry to say, but I tried the electric drill trick, and it simply does not work. Why, you ask? Partly because you cannot turn the chuck fast enough by hand to generate sufficient current to excite the fields in the generator. Partly because most small tools of this nature do not hold enough residual magnetism to be an effective generator. I did try flashing one from another generator, and it had only limited success. I suppose there was more current required than I was able to provide. Either way, I concluded that it would require significantly more exciting than I had provided. My result was that the generator that had only produced 7 to 10 volts now produces about 45 volts. At some point, I may try again to excite it.

pull the end cap the same one you pulled to replace the bolt looking thru the support web that has the bearing in it you will see the ROTOR WINDINGS turn it by hand you will see two or more posts standing about 3/8 inch out of the rotor , attach leads from a small battery charger to those two posts the rotor will try to turn leave it connected about 15 seconds , put back everything you took off and start it up you will have output !!

Guys , I need to clarify something . I posted about this generator about 3 years ago . The motor runs , but the governer is out of adjustment as I had to replace the governer itself.Haven't had the time to fix it . So the motor runs , but at a high rpm . The generator itself actually works . My friend just wants to do a video on it for our youtube site on how to excite the generator .

Most low end AC generators are self excited & are of two designs, brush type & brushless, both types use diodes on field windings to change voltage to DC,check your parts list for same or if you don't have remove end bell/cover on generator & look in same/on generator frame for diodes, same may be inline or stud mount/press fit on a bracket,if either of these doides shorted/open you will get half output voltage/no output from generator,if either diode bad flashing field with drill or ext DC source will not work.

Had same problem on my 40 yr old dayton belt drive brush type generator several yrs ago,was only getting 50v out of generator, checked diodes with an ohmmeter, found one diode shorted, replaced diode & got full 120/240v output back.

Guys,

There is something else that I forgot to say . My generator only has four 110 vac plugs on the front for output . There is no DC plug or 220 vac plug . Just the four 110 vac plugs .
