20hp Twin cylinder on an MTD mower.1997 I believe. When I can get this thing to run it spits gas out the carb air inlet and sometimes wants to shoot flame. I figure it is either timing or valves. Also I can get it run but soon after it wants to load up and spit the gas out So maybe there is a carb problem also? I have never worked on one of these so I am lost. How do I set timing and the valves? Mower is in like new condition with original paint still under the deck.

I'm no expert on twin cylinders. There are so many different engines available now that if I work on one that is unfamiliar I simply purchase a service manual that covers that engine. Briggs and Stratton has manuals for various models and I think they have one just for twin cylinders. If you intend to do your own work, there is no substitute for a good manual and I recommend the factory type. If there is a small engine supply house in your area they may stock them, if not they can order one for you. Otherwise there are several places that advertise on line. PSEP.biz is one, and Jacks small engines is another that I think of immediately. If that doesn't work just Google small gasoline engines and a menu should come up. And good luck.
