i have an early 90s craftsman garden tractor i bought used last year. i dont know the history of the engine.it was a trade in. 20 horse kohlor magnum.it has a tict to it when cold but afterrunning 10 minites it goes away.changed oil and filter,no improvement.engine model cv675s..does this engine have adjustble vavles or hydrolic lifters.

its a kohlor command engine.i am running 10w 30 castrol oil.as i said it goes away after about 10 minites of hard running.

They have hydraulic lifters. A little searching around the "net will bright up all sorts of posts/arguments about lifter noise in those engines and what oil is best to use. Of course, Kohler says to use theirs. Linked below is ONE discussion on the subject. (I have NO connection to "Bob the oil guy.)
Tick, tick, tick...

You might want to try adding an oil additive for cars that cleans/frees noisey/sticking lifters & running with same for a while, lifter plungers/check valves may have dirt/varnish buildup in lifter body due to infrequent oil changes/poor maint by previous owner & plungers sticking in body or ball check valves leaking allowing lifters to leakdown & tap when cold, after eng/lifters reach operating temp lifter body may expand enough to free plunger or ball valve & tap goes away.

It is a proven fact that the Kohler command 10W30 air cooled engine oil works the best in Command engines. I have had more than one customer bring a mower in with that complaint, using automotive, water cooled engine oil. We changed oil, put command oil in, and lifter noise was no longer an issue.
