MTD Statesman Electrial Problem



Hello all,


I have a MTD Statesman app. a 1999 or 2000 model mower with a 16.5 ( on body sticker , but top of motor says 16 hp 93 model so apparently someone has changed motors or tops . Sticker on body also says spin on oil filter and there is an oil filter on it so it's anyone call . ) 42 inch cut . Someone has done a butcher job on the electrical system . Took all the wires on the blade safety switch ( manual engagement ) wires coming from the body harness to switch and tied them together color coded , all yellows together and all reds together etc. Unscrewed the metal reverse switch from the plate where the forward and reverse gear shift is located to kill the engine when put in reverse with blades on . Did samething on the brake switch even threw the plug away after cutting wires and tapeing the body harness wires together . Did a botch job on charging system wires to and apparently changed the charging ring under motor . I got replacement plugs off of another older model MTD mower at a mower junkyard and have it mostly fixed meaning I replaced the brake switch plug ,replaced the reverse kill switch , reconnected the wires for the brake and blade switch . Works great now , Engine used to start with blades engaged and brake off , now you have to have the brake engaged and blades off , reverse kill switch works . I have figgured out the charging system , just need more connectors to hook it up . My only problem now is the kill wire from engine coil . Where does it hook up ? In the yellow safety wires ? I thought that there was a kill wire off of key switch that hooked to it but theres not and I haven't seen a cut wire that's not hooked up . So my question is - where does the kill wire from engine hook up into the body harness ? Does anyone know or have a "good " wiring diagram of it , or know where I can get one ? I found this one on MTDs website and on a mower parts place and as you can tell it's very hard to read . I need a better one that tell to what the wires are connecting to also . Any and all help is appreciated .

Kill wire from the engine has to be grounded to kill the engine, and that's done through the ignition switch. If you put 12 volts to that line, you burn out the magneto under the flywheel. IF the engine has been swapped out, you have to get creative.

Thank you . I know that the kill wire has to be grounded to kill the motor and I have thought of running the wire to a switch and the other leg to a ground . I don't want to do this as I like to keep my mowers from looking rigged , but may have to do it. I know that there is a ground wire from switch , but which one is it is my problem / question.

OK it killed the engine when you put it in reverse ? If you still have that wire from coil not hooked up how did in "all work great now "
 
Pull the connector off the back of the ignition switch. There should actually be one lug marked G. Go from there and you're golden.

The blade switch and brake switch were both disconnected with the wires from the frame harness tied together by color . I hooked the blade switch up and tested it BEFORE I unhooked the brake switch and when I unhooked the brake switch I then unhooked the kill wire from engine .
