Moline Lawn Tractor Repower

Hey everyone,
So i have an old lawn tractor that i posted on here previously. It has a piston rod that has broken. I'm considering just purchasing a new engine to throw in it. The old engine is a Kohler K301, and i'm considering purchasing a Kohler command pro 14?
Has anyone done a swap like this, maybe with another type of engine? Thanks for any help or advice.

You should contact smallenginewarehouse to see if they have a replacement engine. You probably should measure the length and diameter of your old engine's shaft. I bought a 10hp B&S engine from them for a Troy Bilt tiller. It was an easy swap. Cost was about $450.00 including shipping. It also has electric start and I sold the old Tecumseh engine for $65.00. If you put a replacement engine in it, the value of a collector tractor will go down in a big way.
I would consider rebuilding the present engine or selling it to me.

Minneapolis Moline garden tractor's are very rare and collectable installing a different engine means it value is little more than the engine you install if you don't want to repair or find a Kohler K301 sell your tractor as it is and buy another tractor probably for the same money as an engine will cost, if your near MN I would be interested.

Are you near Texas Panhandle? Repowering that tracotr would be a crying shame. I"ll buy it as is if you are near by.

You may be able to buy a Kohler 301 short block

Unless the rod went through the side of the block, that engine is fairly easy to rebuild, and a lot cheaper to rebuild than to replace.

The Command Pro is a very good Chinese built engine with a slanted cylinder but it takes up considerably more space than the K301.

Where would you guys recommend buying a good complete rebuild kit? I find some but not allot will list more than just the standard tolerance sizes

Check with your local auto machine shop. The engine block and crankshaft needs to be measured for wear. If the block needs to bored oversize and the crankshaft ground undersize the machine shop would get the correct size piston, rings and connecting rod. Have them grind the valves.
Get a ball park figure what all this cost from the shop. You may be better off to buy a new short block and use the old cylinder head and oil pan. I did that on a Kohler 321 engine that was on a JD 140 tractor. Hal
