Gravely Tractor

I am competely disassembling my Gravely Tractor L8 1964. May be I should say trying as there is a problem trying to remove the Chain Gear Sprocket. Can someone explain how this is done? I have removed the Snap Ring, but Sprocket will not move. Put a puller on it, and don't want to damage it. Thank you.

Bob DO NOT PROCEED WITH WHAT YOU ARE DOING!
you will break something and it will cost you big $$$. The starter sprocket comes off the crank as one assembly. You can remove the spark plug, turn the piston to bottom out. Put about 2" of rope down the cylinder, get a big adjustable wrench and turn the odd-ball nut on the end of the starter. The starter is a right hand thread. The rope should stop the piston from traveling to the top. I also would advise you to use the gravely group on yahoo if you need more advice. There are a lot of good folks there that will help.

Bill,
I have removed the cylinder, and the piston. What you are saying is the rope stops the piston from going all the way around so you can turn the (2) sided or (2) flats on this special bolt counter clockwise to remove the sprocket? Thank you.
Bob

Bob, we're talking about the engine sprocket, right, not the one on the starter?

On one I did from the 1950's, the starter sprocket was screwed on, while the fan pulley was pressed on.

Ben,
Yes, I am going to install the piston, and cylinder now. Cleaned up the piston and noticed on the exhaust side there is some damage on the top, to about 3/16 from the top piston ring. Don't know if this may be part of my problem, or if it is what Richard told me years ago, that the crank is misaligned. Probably both? Thank you.
Bob

Yes Bob, the rope will stop the crank from turning. The wrench is put on the 2 sided nut on the end of the starter sprocket.
